Boston’s Adams Center Among Leading Cosmetic Surgery Practices Nationally, Says ASAPS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Boston, MA–March 11, 2003—The Adams Center of Boston and Peabody ranks among the top 10% of board-certified plastic surgeons in the U.S. who, on average, performed the highest volume of cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures in 2002, according to a survey by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

In 2002, the number of cosmetic procedures in the U. S. totaled nearly 6.9 million. This figure represents a 228% increase compared to the number of procedures performed in 1997.

Dr. William P. Adams, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board certified cosmetic surgeon and Director of The Adams Center believes, “Bostonians tend to be naturally confident. Cosmetic procedures, both surgical and non-surgical are ways to enhance that confidence. When people feel great about how they look, that shows in everything they do.”

The more expensive procedures such as a face lift aren’t always what does it either. Dr. Adams continues, “Often non-surgical procedures such as removing spider veins in the legs, laser skin resurfacing to remove facial scarring, or Botox to combat wrinkles are all

that it takes. Other times, a surgical procedure like a tummy tuck or breast augmentation is what makes someone happy.”

The recent ASAPS survey echoes Dr. Adams’ comments. Not all cosmetic procedures made gains in 2002 compared to the previous year, but those that did include Tummy Tuck (83,000) up 17%; Breast Augmentation (249,641) up 15%; and Facelift (124,514) up 6%. Botox® injections (1,658,667) were up 4% in 2001, and since 1997, Botox® procedures are up 2400%.

Other top surgical procedures in 2002 were Liposuction (372,831); Eyelid Surgery (229,092); Nose Resculpturing (156,973); and Breast Reduction (125,614). Breast reduction may be covered by insurance.

“Beauty is subjective, and everyone’s ideals are different”, says Dr. Adams. “People have more options available today to help them achieve their ideal of beauty then they did even five years ago. Increasingly, these options include minimally invasive procedures with little or no downtime that sometimes can delay the need for more extensive surgery.” In 2002, The Adams Center performed approximately 2,000 surgical and non-surgical procedures.
