Qualifications

Dr. Michael F. Zwicklbauer

Michael F. Zwicklbauer, MD, FACS, is called "Dr. Z" by patients and staff at the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads. He joined the practice in 1997. Dr. "Z" received his medical degree from Albany Medical College and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts where he received the Charles Eckert Award for Exceptional Achievement in Surgery. He was then selected for a hand fellowship specializing in microsurgery at the University of Miami followed by a fellowship in plastic surgery at the Medical College of Virginia.

Dr. Zwicklbauer is Board Certified in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Society of Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Medical Society of Virginia, the American College of Surgeons, and the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. He is also a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, a medical honor society that comprises the top ten percent of medical students.

Dr. Zwicklbauer chose plastic surgery because he feels, "it is a most rewarding, gratifying and intimate occupation because I am able to help my patients obtain a goal. For some the goal may be functional, such as helping an arthritic patient regain the use of their hands and for others, the goal may be cosmetic." Dr. "Z" observes, "We are all human and have some degree of vanity. Whether you are 20 or 80, that doesn't change. Most cosmetic patients say to me, 'I am 50, but I feel like I'm still 30.' I try to help bridge that gap."

Dr. "Z" grew up in upstate New York and graduated from William & Mary where he played soccer in NCAA Division 1. He and his wife, Marianne, and their two children, Kristin and Erik, live in Newport News. Dr. "Z" and Marianne can be frequently found on the sidelines at their children's many athletic events cheering them on.

Dr. Frank A. Schuler, III

Frank A. Schuler, III, MD is one of the senior partners of the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads. Dr. Schuler began his plastic surgery private practice in Newport News in 1980. He was joined by Dr. Alexander McArthur in 1985. The five surgeon group that is now known as Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads formed in 1995 and brought together over 75 years of surgical experience.

Dr. Schuler is Board Certified in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and is a member of numerous nationally recognized professional societies, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the Lipoplasty Society of North America, the Southeastern Society of Plastic Surgery and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. His focus on cosmetic surgery has enabled him to meet the special requirements to receive the certificate of Advanced Education in Cosmetic Surgery from the Aesthetic Society.

Dr. Schuler was initially attracted to plastic surgery because of its reconstructive aspects-whether from congenital deformities, accidents or disease related. Through the years, Dr. Schuler has increasingly found satisfaction in cosmetic surgery. He enjoys improving people's appearance and bringing it into line with their view of themselves.

Dr. Schuler is well known for the quality of his surgical results. He is extremely organized. In the operating room, this attention to detail reduces surgical and anesthesia times. In the office, Dr. Schuler's patients appreciate how carefully he maintains his schedule.

Dr. Schuler shares his love of the outdoors with his wife, Sandy, including golf, sailing, salt-water fishing and scuba diving. He also shares many of these interests with his 4 children and 2 grandchildren.

Dr. Alexander McArthur, III

Alexander McArthur, III, MD is one of the senior partners here at the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads. He joined Dr. Schuler in 1985. Dr. McArthur received his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia earning the John Gibbon Award for best surgical student in the medical school. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Connecticut-Hartford Hospital. He was then selected by Duke University for their prestigious plastic surgery residency program. Dr. McArthur then went to Kleinert Institute in Louisville, Kentucky for a hand surgery fellowship.

Dr. McArthur is Board Certified in both Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and General Surgery and has received the certificate of added qualification in Surgery of the Hand from the American Board of Medical Specialties. Specialty memberships include the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons and American Medical Association.

When asked about his decision to become a plastic surgeon, Dr. McArthur said, "Plastic Surgery is a positive specialty. Everyday brings new and different challenges and rewards. On the reconstructive side, I like putting patients 'back together' and improving their lives."

Dr. McArthur and his wife, Barbara, have three children. His son and eldest daughter are graduates of the University of Virginia and his youngest daughter is currently attending UVA. The family enjoys many activities together including supporting the UVA football team, scuba diving, boating, and biking.

Dr. Peter Vonu

Peter Vonu, MD received his medical degree and completed his surgical residency at the Medical College of Ohio. During his plastic surgery residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Dr. Vonu discovered his greatest interest was in cosmetic procedures and went on to continue his training in cosmetic surgery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Dr. Vonu is Board Certified in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is an active member in many professional organizations including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, Lipoplasty Society of North America and the Medical Society of Virginia.

At the age of five, Dr. Vonu was inspired by his pediatrician and decided to become a physician. He never wavered from that choice. When asked why he chose plastic surgery as a specialty, Dr. Vonu said, "It offers me the luxury of being both a physician and an artist. I enjoy developing a vision with my patient and then bringing it to fruition." This collaborative approach is much appreciated by his patients. He takes his obligations as a doctor very seriously, wanting to give his patients the best possible result while minimizing their exposure to risks.

Dr. Vonu shares his surgical skills by volunteering with the University of Florida's outreach program. He visited Angola, Africa where he worked with patients correcting congenital malformations.

Dr. Vonu's passion for art extends beyond the operating room. He and his wife Mary enjoy visiting art galleries and finding new pieces to add to their home. An avid sportsman, Dr. Vonu can be frequently found sharing his love of the outdoors with his 3 children, Chelsea, Peter and Trevor. Their Yorktown home is the perfect setting for his family's love of water sports.

Dr. T. Randall (Randy) Blanchard

T. Randall (Randy) Blanchard, MD, FACS joined Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads in 1999. He is a fully trained plastic surgeon having received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his general surgical training at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine. He then completed his plastic surgery training at the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Blanchard is a native Tidewater Virginian. He was born in Norfolk, grew up in Williamsburg and graduated from Hampden Sydney College. Dr. Blanchard was very young when he chose a career in plastic surgery after learning of a neighbor's reconstructive miracle following an accident. Dr. Blanchard is from a medical family and learned much about patient care by observing his father interact with patients in the office and the hospital. His brother joined his father in practice. His sister, Christine Marcuson, M.D. is a dermatologic Mohs surgeon who practices in Williamsburg.

One of the things that Dr. Blanchard enjoys about plastic surgery is that it offers continuous challenges. Every patient is different and procedures have to be tailored to the individual needs of each patient. His philosophy regarding plastic surgery is to educate his patients so that they may become involved in the decision making process regarding the proposed surgery.

Dr. Blanchard was raised in the Tidewater area. His lifelong goal was to return to coastal Virginia, develop his surgical practice and raise his family. Dr. Blanchard and his wife, Lauren live in Seaford with their growing family including their new twin sons. The family enjoys many outdoor activities including boating and fishing.
