Dr. Patricia McGuire

Patricia A. McGuire, M.D. is a board certified plastic surgeon and clinical instructor of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. A St. Louis native, she attended Busch School a magnet school in the St. Louis City Public School district through 8th grade and graduated from Ursuline Academy in Kirkwood in 1979. She graduated from the University of Missouri- Kansas City, School of Medicine in 1985, performed her residency in General Surgery at Jewish Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine 1985-1989, followed by a residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at St. Louis University 1989-1991. She has been in private practice with Parkcrest Plastic Surgery since 1991. She is married to Robert Sciortino, MD, and has 2 daughters and 3 dogs.

Dr. McGuire is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and was awarded the American Medical Women’s Association Award for Academic Achievement in 1985. She was president of the St. Louis Area Society for Plastic Surgeons 2004-2007. Dr. McGuire is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Medical Women’s Association, American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Association of Women Surgeons, St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society and St. Louis Area Society of Plastic Surgeons. She has been named as one of the “Best Doctors” by St. Louis Magazine 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008. She was one of the first plastic surgeons in the area to be invited to participate in Allergan’s Style 410 Cohesive silicone gel study as a clinical investigator in 2001.

Dr. McGuire specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the breast, including augmentation, reduction, and lifts, and cancer reconstruction. She also performs body contouring, including Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction, Power Assisted Liposuction, and Abdominoplasty, some facial cosmetic procedures and hand surgery.

Allergan Style 410 implants

Drs. McGuire and Nathan are clinical investigators for Allergan¹s Style 410 highly cohesive (gummy bear) implant. In 2001, they were the first surgeons in the area to be invited to participate in this study. The Style 410 implant has been available in Europe since 1991, and was approved in Canada in 2006. It is currently available in the United States under study protocol to a limited number of plastic surgeons. The Style 410 Matrix offers 144 implants in 12 shapes to allow a more ³custom² implant for breast augmentation and cancer reconstruction. The Style 410 implant has the highest number of cross-links between the silicone molecules and therefore is the most ³cohesive² of the currently available cohesive implants. This gives a high safety margin, with a low risk of rupture with gel bleed, and a low capsular contracture rate.

Dr. McGuire and Dr. Nathan have among the largest series of breast augmentations and reconstructions in the United States using these implants. Their experience was presented in a paper at the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons in Melbourne, Australia, in February of 2008. Dr. McGuire is one of four plastic surgeons chosen to be a consultant for the curriculum committee for Allergan to teach other physicians how to use the Style 410 implant. Both Dr. Nathan and Dr McGuire spent time in Stockholm, Sweden in June 2006 with Dr. Charles Randquist, considered an international expert in the use of the Style 410 implant. Dr. Nathan and McGuire also have extensive experience with the other options for breast implants including silicone gel and saline implants. They use dimensional planning, using the patient¹s anatomy to determine the best option for each patient. The Style 410 implant is not always the best choice for breast augmentation and their experience with all types of implants, including the Style 410, can help a patient decide which implant is best for them.

Dr. David A. Caplin

Dr. David Caplin, a Board-certified plastic surgeon, is a native of New York City. He received his undergraduate degree with honors from Kenyon College and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society. He completed his training in general surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and his residency in plastic surgery at Barnes Hospital. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He is a member of numerous societies, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Lipoplasty Society, and the American Association for Endoscopic Hand Surgery, among others. He is a recipient of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s “Certificate of Advanced Education in Cosmetic Surgery.” He has also been consistently chosen as one of “America’s Top Surgeons” and “Top Doctors” for many years.

His areas of special interest include facial cosmetic surgery, all aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the breast, liposuction, body contouring, and endoscopic hand surgery. Dr. Caplin’s interest in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the breast has led to his involvement in a number of national studies, to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of new forms of breast implants. These include the Mentor CPG (gummy bear) implant study in which he has been participating as an investigator since 2002, and has one of the longest and largest clinical experiences with this procedure in North America. He also performs minimally invasive cosmetic surgical procedures such as laser-assisted liposuction (Smart Lipo) and procedures for facial rejuvenation. His publications include a chapter in a recently published surgical text on techniques for rejuvenation of the aging neck and face. He also has a long-standing interest in endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery, which is a technique he helped pioneer.

He is on staff at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University, Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital, Missouri Baptist Hospital, Des Peres Hospital, St. Louis Surgical Center and Healthsouth Ballas Surgery Center.

He has a long-standing appointment as a Clinical Instructor in Surgery at Washington University and is actively involved in teaching the plastic surgery residents.

Karyn Brown has been a registered nurse for 30 years and has specialized in plastic surgery for over 15 years. She has years of experience evaluating and treating patients with injections of Botox, Juvederm, Restylane and other injectables. Karyn is available for complimentary consultations for patients interested in injectables and can also perform evaluations for those interested in cosmetic surgery.

Cohesive Gel Implants

Dr. Caplin has been a clinical investigator for the Mentor CPG (gummy bear) Cohesive Gel implant since 2002, and has one of the longest and largest clinical experiences with this procedure in North America. Cohesive Gel implants have been used with great success in Europe for many years but are currently only available to surgeons who are investigators in this study. Although not all patients are appropriate candidates for this implant, it has unique qualities including its form-stabilized anatomic shape and its resistance to implant leakage. The distinguishing factor is that the implant is a soft solid. If the Cohesive implant is cut in half, the implant maintains its shape.

Dr. Caplin has recently been chosen as a principal investigator for a size-adjustable silicone gel implant. The size of the implant can be increased or decreased simply by injecting small volumes of saline in the office. These implants have been used extensively in other countries with great success. For more information regarding this implant or any of the other implant studies in which Dr. Caplin is an investigator, please contact the office.
