Qualifications

Dr. Parkins received her bachelor's degree and master's degree in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. It was during this time that she developed an interest in plastic surgery. She was involved in research to create skin substitutes for burn victims and then volunteered in a burn unit, where plastic surgeons performed reconstructive surgery to help patients recover form and function. From this experience and her desire to work with patients she was led to the medical profession.

She graduated with honors from medical school at the University of Illinois in Peoria but prior to that spent a year in South America as part of a volunteer program called Worldteach. She also participated in a medical trip to Mexico to treat patients with cleft lip and palate during medical school.

After finishing medical school, Dr. Parkins completed an integrated residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals in Milwaukee.

Dr. Parkins has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the following recognition:

  • Outstanding Paper Award for A Peripheral Nerve Repair Model Using fRMI in Rats, which was presented at the joint meeting session of the American Society for Peripheral Nerve, American Society for Hand Surgery and the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery in Boca Raton, Florida.
  • Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Plastic Surgery Best Basic Science Research Paper Award (Milwaukee, Wisconsin).
  • First Place Residents Basic Science Presentation Award at the Midwestern Association of Plastic Surgeons 47th Annual Meeting (Chicago, Illinois).

Dr. Parkins enjoys ballroom and salsa dancing, scuba diving and skiing in her free time. However, most of her free time is spent with her three-year-old son and new baby girl. Her husband, Dr. David Parkins, is an anesthesiologist who also practices at UW Health Partners Watertown Regional Medical Center.
