Dr. Mayfield is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery should be of paramount importance to you when choosing the right surgeon for your cosmetic surgery or aesthetic treatments. Most physicians are board certified in 'something,' but that does not mean they are trained and qualified to perform cosmetic plastic surgery.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only specialty board recognized by The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) to certify plastic surgeons. Established in 1933, the ABMS is a not-for-profit organization comprising 24 medical specialty Member Boards, and is the pre-eminent entity overseeing the certification of physician specialists in the United States.

Any physician can claim to be a cosmetic or plastic surgeon. As the popularity of cosmetic plastic surgery has increased over the past several years, more and more doctors that did not train to practice plastic surgery are becoming involved in cosmetic surgery and aesthetic treatments. As a result, there has been a proliferation of "Academies" and "Boards" with titles that include words such as "Plastic" and "Cosmetic" in them. Remember, aside from The American Board of Plastic Surgery, none of these groups are recognized by the ABMS to certify plastic surgeons.
