Alexander Nein, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Nein is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has been certified by the American Board of Surgery [general surgery]. His extensive experience in cosmetic surgery can provide you with the confidence that the investment you make in your appearance will be carried out with skill and caring judgment. Dr. Nein's experience with facial and breast reconstruction gives him a complete view of the elements needed to provide optimal cosmetic results.

Dr. Nein trained in plastic surgery at Vanderbilt University and in general surgery at Louisiana State University. Both of these highly respected programs are based at Level I trauma centers. The experience of managing the most badly injured and severely ill patients at both of these institutions has given Dr. Nein the skills and judgment necessary to handle the medical issues of the cosmetic patient. Rest assured that your well being, safety and cosmetic result are foremost in his mind.

Special clinical interests of Dr. Nein include cosmetic surgery, breast surgery, and body contouring. He has co-authored several articles, appearing in the Journal of Trauma, Cardiovascular Surgery and The Louisiana State Medical Society Journal.

A member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the International Confederation for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Dr. Nein is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has also been an active participant in Operation Smile - the organization that provides medical service throughout the world to children and people otherwise unable to receive care for major medical problems such as cleft lips and cleft palates and other congenital defects.

Dr. Nein is on the medical staff of several major hospitals in Nashville including one that has been ranked as one of America's top 100 hospitals. He holds committee appointments at each of these facilities.

Dr. Nein is originally from Huntsville, Alabama and currently resides in a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Nein received a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Alabama. He also has a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University.

Dr. Nein comes from a family of engineers. His father and several uncles are engineers with graduate degrees. His mother was a computer analyst. They have worked for NASA and have contributed to America's space program and the moon landing. Dr. Nein studied engineering in college to pursue a career in high technology and engineering research. After graduating near the top of his class as an undergraduate at the The University of Alabama, Dr. Nein received a research scholarship from Purdue University. There he conducted research on continuous combustion engines (turbine) and completed a thesis on combustion for his Master's degree in mechanical engineering.

Arco Oil and Gas hired Dr. Nein after the completion of his studies at Purdue University. While at Arco, he worked in the Arctic Technologies Group of Arco's Research and Development division. He worked on solving problems unique to the production of oil in the harsh arctic environment. During that time, while playing on the Arco volleyball team, Dr. Nein sustained an injury to his knee that ultimately required surgery.

The orthopedic surgeon who treated Dr. Nein, pointed out that it would not be necessary to completely open the knee (as had been common practice) but rather the surgery could be done arthroscopically through a few small incisions. This would be possible because of the development and use of fiber optics. Dr. Nein was aware that the engineering community had been using fiber optics for quite some time and he realized that there was a delay in the application of the newest technology to medicine. He felt that this could be an area in which he could contribute to the advancement of medicine and so began his interest in pursuing medicine.

Dr. Nein applied and was accepted to the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) medical school. His initial plan was to study orthopedics and apply his engineering skills to that discipline. In fact, he spent extra time in the clinical studies of orthopedics with that goal in mind. During the clinical portion of his medical studies, Dr. Nein rotated through plastic surgery. After only a few days on the plastic surgery service, he realized that plastic surgery held the elements of medicine and surgery that were most interesting to him. It involved not only medicine and surgery but applied "body engineering" as well as art and aesthetics.

After completing medical school, Dr. Nein completed his training in general surgery at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. This highly respected surgery training program is also the home of a Level I trauma center, a regional burn center, a major transplantation center and provided care to the region's indigent population. This provided a tremendous learning experience both in surgery and in the management of critically ill patients. During that time, Dr. Nein met a nurse while working in the heart transplant unit who later became his wife.

The best plastic surgery training programs generally accept only those physicians who have completed training in general surgery. Dr. Nein and his wife moved to Nashville to begin his training in plastic surgery at Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt has one of the nation's best-respected plastic surgery training programs. The recently retired chairman (Dr. John B. Lynch) had been president of and on the board of every major plastic surgery organization in the United States.

Dr. Nein completed his residency in plastic surgery and he and his wife made the decision to settle in Nashville permanently and raise their children here. He is in solo private practice in Nashville, specializing in cosmetic surgery.
