Office

We operate primarily at one of two facilities on the campus of Shelby Baptist Medical Center. Procedures that do not require overnight stays are generally performed at Shelby Ambulatory Surgery at the Physician’s Center. Procedures requiring overnight stays are done at Shelby Baptist Medical Center with post-operative care for our female patients arranged through the hospital’s attractive and well appointed Women’s Center. The staff at both facilities provide professional, compassionate, care with your privacy as a priority. They feature state-of-the-art modern operating rooms, pre-op and recovery areas. Our anesthesia teams are made up of board certified anesthesiologists and certified, registered, fully credentialed nurse anesthetists. We also have two operating rooms in our office that we use for smaller procedures that can be done under local anesthetics.

Qualifications

Dr. Cotter was born in Galveston, Texas in 1956. With his father serving as a general surgeon in the Public Health Service, he moved with his family to New Orleans, then Memphis and finally to Huntsville, Alabama. Growing up in Huntsville, Dr. Cotter graduated from Huntsville High School. He completed degrees in Physical Anthropology and Chemistry from the University of Alabama where he was named as a Distinguished Undergraduate Scholar. After Medical School at UAB he trained in general surgery at Carraway Methodist Medical Center and completed his Plastic Surgery training at the University of Louisville. He was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. in 1989. His practice began in Pensacola, Florida. In 1990, he returned to private practice in the Birmingham area and is currently affiliated with Shelby Baptist Medical Center, where he serves as Chief of Surgery.
