Honesty is far more important than salesmanship in this field. It starts with our being able to communicate openly with frankness and sincerity. As a patient, it is important to know that you have been heard, and the same is true for the physician. Managing expectations is essential when it comes to plastic surgery. While we strive for perfection, it is always just beyond our reach. You have to be honest with yourself about whether you can live with this, or perhaps there are ways other than surgery to meet your goals.
The hospital staff constantly comments on how exceptionally nice my patients are, and I absolutely agree! It is easy to be nice in a stressful situation when you are well prepared and are receiving the best care we can offer. Plastic surgery has an alluring reputation, but there is nothing very glamorous about the recovery process. Even though it may be considered “elective” or by choice, it is still real surgery with all of its hardships and potential complications. While this is what we do everyday, rest assured we will never forget it is perhaps a once in a lifetime event for you!
