What Is Botox? How Does Botox Work?

Botox is one of the many trade names for the neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In large doses, the protein causes botulism, a scarce paralytic illness often linked to food poisoning. However, the protein is used in cosmetic medicine to treat moderate to severe brow furrow (glabellar lines), uncontrolled blinking, lazy eye, wrinkles, and facial creases.

Shetland Seaweed For Safer Hair Dyes And Cosmetics

Scientists have launched a project to make hair dye out of seaweed from acircular the Shetland Islands. Scientists at the University of Leeds are planning to extract chemical compounds from different species of seaweed and use them to develop a new range of hair dyes. The naturally sourced compounds will be used by scientists as substitutes for synthetic ingredients that can be found in most hair dyes currently on the market.

Candela Receives Registration Approval To Market The Alex TriVantage Laser In Brazil

Candela Corporation (NASDAQ:CLZR) announced that it has received registration approval from the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) to market the Candela Alex TriVantage® multi-wavelength, q-switched laser system in Brazil. Cytori Therapeutics (NASDAQ:CYTX) was informed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the Celution® 700 System will be regulated as a medical device under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. This determination, in response to Cytori's Request for Designation, clears the way for Cytori to compile and submit a marketing application to the FDA for the Celution® 700 System for use as a medical device in aesthetic body contouring and/or filling of soft tissue voids.
